Back injuries aren't just a personal problem. They're a huge issue for employers, too. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), more than 200,000 back injuries are reported each year, which means roughly 1 out of every 5 workplace injuries is a back injury. Back injuries cause thousands of employees to miss work, which in turn affects a company's productivity - and ultimately the bottom line. Furthermore, back injuries increase workers' compensation claims and drive up health insurance costs..all at a time when many companies are struggling to keep their health care costs under control.
Many people believe that back injuries stem from a single traumatic incident, such as trying to lift a load that is too heavy or suffering a fall. It's the luck of the draw, right? Wrong. The fact is, most back injuries are cumulative, the result of weak muscles, poor diet, lack of exercise, bad habits and repeated minor strains. Then, all it might take is one wrong twist or stumble to "throw your back out." Once injured, the chance of re-aggravating a back injury increases, as most back problems re-occur within a year if not properly treated.
Back Safety: Keeping Your Back in Action is an informative training program that will help you educate your company's employees on how to maintain healthy backs by using a few practical, but effective, guidelines and techniques. The main objective of this program is to promote and understanding of the basic principles of back safety and health and to stress to employees that avoiding back injuries is ultimately within their control, and the rewards of doing so will improve their overall quality of life.
After completing this course, learners will be able to:
- Describe how the human back works
- Discuss various types of back pain and identify what causes it
- Demonstrate how to properly perform everyday tasks to prevent back pain and injuries
