Entry-Level Driver Training: Medical Requirements

Course Length: 15 minutes

Intended Audience: Drivers who are applying for an initial commercial driver's license (CDL) or drivers upgrading their current CDL.

Course Disclaimer: This course can be used to help satisfy the theory instruction portion of the new entry-level driver training (ELDT) requirements that go into effect on February 7, 2022. To satisfy the theory instruction requirements, this course must be assigned and administered by a school or other entity listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Training Provider Registry (TPR). To satisfy the complete ELDT training requirements, the school or entity conducting the training must provide the driver-trainee "behind-the-wheel" instruction in addition to theory instruction.

Regs Covered: Unit A1.5.10 Medical Requirements

This unit must teach driver-trainees the Federal rules on medical certification, medical examination procedures, general qualifications, responsibilities, and disqualifications based on various offenses, orders, and loss of driving privileges (49 CFR part 391, subparts B and E).

Overview: There's more to becoming a professional driver than just obtaining an operator's license and hitting the road. This course covers some of the regulatory requirements drivers must meet in order to be qualified to operate a commercial motor vehicle.

This course is designed to teach entry-level drivers about the general and physical qualifications that must be met to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV).

Objectives

After completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • Discuss general and physical qualifications and disqualification factors for drivers who operate a CMV
  • Explain the process of obtaining a medical examiner's certificate
  • Identify how a driver can become disqualified from driving a CMV
