Entry-Level Driver Training: Extreme Driving Conditions: Prepareing for Extreme Driving Conditions

Course Length: 15 minutes

Intended Audience: Drivers who are applying for an initial commercial driver's license (CDL) or drivers upgrading their current CDL.

Course Disclaimer: This course can be used to help satisfy the theory instruction portion of the new entry-level driver training (ELDT) requirements that go into effect on February 7, 2022. To satisfy the theory instruction requirements, this course must be assigned and administered by a school or other entity listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Training Provider Registry (TPR). To satisfy the complete ELDT training requirements, the school or entity conducting the training must provide the driver-trainee "behind-the-wheel" instruction in addition to theory instruction.

Regs Covered: Unit A1.2.7 Extreme Driving Conditions

This unit must teach driver-trainees about the specific problems presented by extreme driving conditions. The training provided will emphasize the factors affecting the operation of CMVs in cold, hot, and inclement weather and on steep grades and sharp curves. The training provider must teach proper tire chaining procedures.

Overview: For the professional driver, extreme driving conditions demand increased preparation and awareness. Both the driver and the vehicle must be in top form.

This course is designed to introduce drivers to the challenges of operating a vehicle in extreme driving conditions.

After completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify common ways to prepare your vehicle for driving in adverse weather conditions
  • Discuss the steps you should take to prepare yourself for adverse weather conditions
