Course Disclaimer: This course can be used to help satisfy the theory instruction portion of the new entry-level driver training (ELDT) requirements that go into effect on February 7, 2022. To satisfy the theory instruction requirements, this course must be assigned and administered by a school or other entity listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Training Provider Registry (TPR). To satisfy the complete ELDT training requirements, the school or entity conducting the training must provide the driver-trainee "behind-the-wheel" instruction in addition to theory instruction.
Regs Covered: Unit A1.5.8 Trip Planning
This unit must address the importance of and requirements for planning routes and trips. This instruction must address planning the safest route, planning for rest stops, heavy traffic areas, railroad highway grade crossing safe clearance and ground clearance (i.e., "high center"), the importance of Federal and State requirements on the need for permits, and vehicle size and weight limitations. The training providers must teach driver-trainees in the correct identification of restricted routes, the pros and cons of Global Positioning System (GPS)/trip routing software, and the importance of selecting fuel-efficient routes.
Overview: The idea behind trip planning is to design the most effective, efficient, safe, and legal route between two points. A well thought out trip plan can mean a savings of time and money for drivers and their motor carrier.
A good plan can also mean a safe trip for drivers and the cargo they are hauling. If drivers have a solid plan before hitting the road, they are better able to devote all of their attention to driving.
This course is designed to focus on the five basic steps of trip planning.
