Entry-Level Driver Training: Visual Search

Course Length: 15 minutes

Intended Audience: Drivers who are applying for an initial commercial driver's license (CDL) or drivers upgrading their current CDL.

Course Disclaimer: This course can be used to help satisfy the theory instruction portion of the new entry-level driver training (ELDT) requirements that go into effect on February 7, 2022. To satisfy the theory instruction requirements, this course must be assigned and administered by a school or other entity listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Training Provider Registry (TPR). To satisfy the complete ELDT training requirements, the school or entity conducting the training must provide the driver-trainee "behind-the-wheel" instruction in addition to theory instruction.

Regs Covered: Unit A1.2.1 Visual Search

This unit must teach driver-trainees to visually search the road for potential hazards and critical objects, including instruction on recognizing distracted pedestrians or distracted drivers.

Overview: Safe, professional drivers are aware of what's going on around their vehicles. In this course drivers will be introduced to the skills required to conduct an effective visual search.

This training is designed to help drivers learn the skills required to conduct an effective visual search.

Objectives

After completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain the importance of continuously scanning your surroundings
  • Discuss how to perform a proper visual scan in front of, to the sides, and behind your vehicle
  • Recognize potential hazards you must be aware of and react to while driving
  • Describe the different types of mirrors and what each is designed for
  • Explain how to properly adjust your mirrors and use them while driving
