Entry-Level Driver Training: Handling and Documenting Cargo
Course Length: 25 minutes
Intended Audience: Drivers who are applying for an initial commercial driver's license (CDL) or drivers upgrading their current CDL.
Course Disclaimer: This course can be used to help satisfy the theory instruction portion of the new entry-level driver training (ELDT) requirements that go into effect on February 7, 2022. To satisfy the theory instruction requirements, this course must be assigned and administered by a school or other entity listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Training Provider Registry (TPR). To satisfy the complete ELDT training requirements, the school or entity conducting the training must provide the driver-trainee "behind-the-wheel" instruction in addition to theory instruction.
Regs Covered: Unit A1.5.1 Handling and Documenting Cargo
This unit must teach the basic theory of cargo weight distribution, cargo securement on the vehicle, cargo covering, and techniques for safe and efficient loading/unloading. The training providers must teach driver-trainees the basic cargo security/cargo theft prevention procedures. The training provider must teach driver-trainees the basic information regarding the proper handling and documentation of HM cargo.
Overview: Properly handling, securing, and delivering cargo are all tasks drivers will face on a daily basis.
This course will address the importance of properly handling cargo, cargo security, cargo securement, and weight distribution principles.
Objectives
After completing this course, learners will be able to:
- Recognize cargo securement devices
- Explain how to evenly distribute your cargo
- Identify how to safely load and unload your vehicle
- Describe how to properly handle and document hazardous material cargo
- Practice cargo theft prevention measures
