Entry-Level Driver Training (Passenger Endorsement): Vehicle Orientation

Course Length: 31 minutes

Intended Audience: Drivers who are applying for an initial commercial driver's license (CDL) or drivers upgrading their current CDL.

Overview: As a bus or motorcoach driver, you will be operating some of the largest vehicles on the road, which also makes them some of the safest vehicles on the road.

Being familiar with the size and layout of the vehicle and how to set up and operate its various components are all critical to safety.

Every model of vehicle is unique and ranges in size from 16 to 60 (or more) passengers. Read the operator's manual for your vehicle! It will have crucial details and precautions concerning all vehicle components.

Entry-Level Driver Training (Passenger Endorsement): Vehicle Orientation is designed to help orient you to common physical and operational features among most buses and motorcoaches; features that you must be familiar with before getting behind the wheel.

Objectives:

After completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain how vehicle size, weight, clearance, and overhang affect safety and operations on the road
  • Describe all major vehicle components and their characteristics, including wheels, tires, and rims, mirrors, lights, windshield and windshield wipers, the engine compartment, the brake system, and the electrical system
