Entry-Level Driver Training (Passenger Endorsement): Baggage Cargo Management
Course Length: 30 minutes
Intended Audience: Drivers who are applying for an initial commercial driver's license (CDL) or drivers upgrading their current CDL.
Overview: Depending on the nature of the trip, bus and motorcoach passengers typically bring along baggage. They may have:
- Personal items they keep in close reach—wallets and purses, phones, drinks, reading materials, etc.
- Items they may stow above or below their seats or in empty seats—jackets, backpacks, bags, small packages, etc.
- Larger items to be stowed in the luggage compartment—suitcases, duffel bags, strollers, sports equipment, large packages, etc.
- Medically-necessary items—wheelchairs or other wheeled mobility devices, service animals, crutches, oxygen tanks, medications, portable dialysis machines, etc.
In addition, an employer may receive payment to transport unaccompanied cargo or packages along the route.
Whenever the motorcoarch driver is transporting baggage, there are certain risks and challenges you need to be aware of and prepared for. That is especially true when those items are hazardous.
Entry-Level Driver Training (Passenger Endorsement): Baggage Cargo Management is designed to help the learner understand proper methods for handling and securing passenger baggage and containers, as applicable; the procedures for identifying and inspecting baggage and containers for prohibited items, such as hazardous materials; and the proper handling and securement of devices associated with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, including oxygen, wheeled mobility devices, and other associated apparatuses.
