Preventing Sexual Harassment in Athletics

This course explains the essential principles of sexual harassment in the athletic context law and provides guidance to help coaches and other sports-related professionals recognize potential problems, deal with them appropriately, and satisfy their legal duties in the event of misconduct involving a minor.

This course is designed for coaches and other sports-related professionals, including athletic trainers, officials, sports psychologists, and sports-information personnel, who have special responsibilities in helping their leagues or schools maintain a respectful athletic environment. Not only must these individuals refrain from engaging in inappropriate conduct (and conduct that has the appearance of inappropriate conduct), but they must know what to do if they observe or learn of such conduct by others. The course discusses sexual harassment in the athletic context, including conduct both on and off the athletic field, consensual relationships between coaches and athletes, and the legal duties of coaches and other sports-related professionals who observe or learn of inappropriate conduct involving minors. This 20-minute course includes pop-quizzes, news clippings and a final quiz highlighting real-world compliance issues that coaches and other sports-related professionals should learn to recognize and respond to appropriately.
