Entry-Level Driver Training (School Bus Endorsement): Loading and Unloading
Course Length: 28 minutes
Intended Audience: School bus drivers who are applying for an initial commercial driver's license (CDL) or drivers upgrading their current CDL.
Overview: Among all the demanding challenges you will face as a school bus driver, the most critical one will be getting your students on and off the bus safely. In fact, the most dangerous part of a trip to or from school is getting on and off the school bus. Approximately three times more students are killed each year while loading or unloading than while riding on the bus. As a bus driver, you will be required to ensure that students are safe before, during, and after the loading and unloading process.
Entry-Level Driver Training (School Bus Endorsement): Loading and Unloading is designed to help CDL drivers obtaining a school endorsement the specific procedures that must be used to help avoid unsafe conditions that could result in injuries or fatalities.
Objectives:
After completing this course, learners will be able to:
- Explain the rules for, and special dangers involved in, loading and unloading
- Identify the proper use of lights, stop arms, crossing gates, and service doors during loading and unloading
- Describe proper procedures for students to wait at a bus stop, cross a roadway, board or exit your vehicle, and reach their seat safely
- Explain the risks involved with leaving students unattended on a school bus
- Describe proper techniques for checking the bus for sleeping children and lost items at the end of each route
