Course Disclaimer: This course can be used to help satisfy the theory instruction portion of the new entry-level driver training (ELDT) requirements that go into effect on February 7, 2022. To satisfy the theory instruction requirements, this course must be assigned and administered by a school or other entity listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Training Provider Registry (TPR). To satisfy the complete ELDT training requirements, the school or entity conducting the training must provide the driver-trainee "behind-the-wheel" instruction in addition to theory instruction.

Regs Covered: Unit A1.1.7 Coupling and Uncoupling

This unit must provide instruction for driver-trainees to develop the skills necessary to conduct the procedures for safe coupling and uncoupling of combination vehicle units, as applicable.

Overview: Professional commercial motor vehicle drivers deal with coupling and uncoupling pretty much on a daily basis. Drivers need to be able to do it efficiently, but they also need to do it safely. If they don't, the costs can be huge.

This course is designed to help drivers understand techniques to help them safely couple a tractor-trailer. They will need to know what to look for when inspecting the coupling system and how the coupling process works.

Objectives

After completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • Explain how to effectively inspect the coupling system, and
