Entry-Level Driver Training: Drugs/Alcohol

Course Length: 25 minutes

Intended Audience: Drivers who are applying for an initial commercial driver's license (CDL) or drivers upgrading their current CDL.

Course Disclaimer: This course can be used to help satisfy the theory instruction portion of the new entry-level driver training (ELDT) requirements that go into effect on February 7, 2022. To satisfy the theory instruction requirements, this course must be assigned and administered by a school or other entity listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Training Provider Registry (TPR). To satisfy the complete ELDT training requirements, the school or entity conducting the training must provide the driver-trainee "behind-the-wheel" instruction in addition to theory instruction.

Regs Covered: Unit A1.5.9 Drugs/Alcohol

This unit must teach driver-trainees the rules applicable to controlled substances (including prescription drugs) and alcohol use and testing related to the operation of a CMV.

Overview: All professional drivers who hold a commercial driver's license (CDL) are subject to the alcohol and drug testing requirements necessary to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV). It's important that professional drivers know about Part 382 of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSRs), which addresses the testing and use of alcohol and drugs for CDL drivers. These regulations exist to prevent vehicle accidents and injuries that are the result of driver misuse of alcohol or abuse of drugs. They help to keep drivers, and everyone on the road, safe.

This course is designed to address the testing and consequences of alcohol and drug use by professional drivers.
