Entry-Level Driver Training: Basic Control
Course Length: 35 minutes
Intended Audience: Drivers who are applying for an initial commercial driver's license (CDL) or drivers upgrading their current CDL.
Course Disclaimer: This course can be used to help satisfy the theory instruction portion of the new entry-level driver training (ELDT) requirements that go into effect on February 7, 2022. To satisfy the theory instruction requirements, this course must be assigned and administered by a school or other entity listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Training Provider Registry (TPR). To satisfy the complete ELDT training requirements, the school or entity conducting the training must provide the driver-trainee "behind-the-wheel" instruction in addition to theory instruction.
Regs Covered: Unit A1.1.4 Basic Control
This unit must introduce basic vehicular control and handling as it applies to combination vehicles. This unit must include instruction addressing basic combination vehicle controls in areas such as executing sharp left and right turns, centering the vehicle, maneuvering in restricted areas, and entering and exiting the interstate or controlled access highway.
Overview: It is important that drivers have a good understanding of basic vehicle control.
These skills are the foundation needed for safe vehicle operation.
This training is designed to help drivers understand basic vehicle controls and maneuvers.
Objectives
After completing this course, learners will be able to:
- Discuss how to start up and shut down your vehicle's engine;
- Describe how to put your vehicle in motion and come to a complete stop; and
- Identify ways to maneuver through turns, curves, and roundabouts, and how to enter/exit highways safely.
