Hazmat: General Awareness

Course Length: 60 minutes

Overview: This course familiarizes learners with the Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) to help them recognize and identify hazardous materials. This course provides General Awareness training to help satisfy the training requirement 49 CFR 172.704(a)(1). This course also provides a "Function-Specific Training Checklist" to help the employee and employer both know what additional function-specific hazmat training will be needed.

After completing this course, learners will be able to:

  • Define key terms, including: Hazardous Material, Hazardous Materials Regulations, Hazardous Materials Table, and Hazmat Employee
  • Identify the required parts of hazmat training
  • Verify a material’s hazard classification using the Hazardous Materials Regulations
  • Navigate the Hazardous Materials Table to look up information on a hazardous material
  • List the required methods to communicate a hazmat's hazard type
  • Distinguish between a label, placard, and marking
  • Explain why shipping papers and Emergency Response Information are important
  • Complete a "Function-Specific Training Checklist" to help your employer know what additional hazmat training you will need
